Reducing Stress with Reducing NOISE

Just like bright lights, loud noises are a signal to your body that there is something going on that it needs to be awake and alert for. It is a stressor that awakens the sympathetic nervous system resulting in the fight or flight response, increasing your adrenaline levels and the ‘stress hormone’- cortisol. That is the exact reason why you will find when trying to get yourself amped up, you’ll play loud music.

Chronically high cortisol means that you never get to relax; physically, your body is “turned on” all the time. If you’re not familiar with all the dangers of that, a partial list would include: gut dysfunction/Irritable Bowel Syndrome, weight gain/metabolic damage/insulin resistance, mood disorders, sleep disorders, immune weakness’ and cravings. Stress throws your normal hormone balance completely out of whack.

In this modern day there is a lot of noise surrounding us including: TVs, radio, music, alarms, people, machinery, cars, sirens etc. which are all out of our control. But, the stress of noise exposure is one thing that you can work on improving.

Have a look at the things you can control, especially at night-time when you are trying to wind down after a long day.

Have a look at the things you can control, especially at night-time when you are trying to wind down after a long day.

  • Phone Notifications - Try turning off all phone notifications such as Facebook, emails and Instagram after 6PM at night. This means your phone won’t be buzzing all night long.

  • Unsubscribing from EMAILS - If you are constantly getting emails from companies that do not benefit you, HIT THE UNSUBSCRIBE BUTTON. It really isn't necessary to get an abundance of emails every day from companies you hardly use.

  • Unfollow/ Unfriend - If you find yourself mindlessly scrolling through social media, full of people who you really don’t care about, it might be time for a little social media detox. Ask yourself - Do I care about what this person is doing? Does this company's posts benefit me emotionally or educationally? If it is a NO, unfollow them!

  • Night-time TV - How long has it been since you turned off the TV and popped on some mellow music instead? The constant noise from the tv can be enough to trigger stress. Try cooking dinner with minimal noise around you and see if it helps relax the mind.
