Here are some tips to make healthier choices:
80% WHOLE FOODS 20% FUN FOODS RULE! Cut back on the amount alcohol, added sugars, salt, refined grains and processed foods you are consuming – try to get creative with your meals and change up your usual sides of rice/bread and see what micro-filled foods you could swap them for.
CLEAN YOUR FRIDGE AND CUPBOARDS- The more ‘fun foods’ you have available, the more likely you are to pick at them during the day. Go through your provisions and look for anything that is out of date, comes in a box and is processed - try making healthy swaps. For example, swap crackers or chips for crunchy veggies, and swap that chocolate bar for some seasonal fruit and have it readily available for you.
PLAN MEALS AND DAILY FOODS AHEAD OF TIME. Try planning your days a head of time, ask your children, partner or housemates to assist you.
COOK AT HOME - If you're regular with dining out, ordering Uber Eats or swinging through that drive-through on the way home...prep your meals at home in advance so you can just heat it up on the spot and save yourself some time, money and calories. Use fresh ingredients and flavour with herbs and spices.
EAT MORE MINDFULLY - Taking the time to chew your food and notice the different textures and tastes of what you eat can help you to feel fuller and enjoy your food more!
HYDRATE - Water is vital for our bodies! It helps us with the function of all our organ systems, circulates oxygen and whisks away toxins. If you are struggling to drink enough, try adding a squeeze of lemon or lime to make it tastier.
PLANT FRESH HERBS, FRUIT OR VEGETABLES - Not only will you get good, nutritious (and inexpensive!) herbs and vegetables, but research shows tending your own patch of earth is a great way to de-stress and can even help ward off depression and anxiety. No yard? Plant a window box or a container garden. Or try growing some herbs in pots on your windowsill. It might help you with including them into your meals.
MOVE YOUR BODY! Self explanatory really, there is no right or wrong way to move your body. Each person will find enjoyment with a different style of exercise - dance, weight training, run, sport, walk, yoga, pilates, boxing.. find what you enjoy and do that :)
